"The City" is a novel by the Ukrainian writer Mykola Pidhirny, which was published in 1924. The book describes the life of ordinary people in the city at the beginning of the 20th century, when Ukraine was under the rule of the Russian Empire. The protagonist of the novel is a young worker, Nikita, who lives in poverty and abuse. The author depicts the cruelty and injustice of the social system, where the rich get even richer, and the poor are left with nothing. "The City" became one of the most famous works of Ukrainian literature of the 20th century and is of great importance as a reminder of the social problems of the Ukrainian people during their struggle for independence and freedom.
